SALON Blue Phoenix Hair Design  |  LOCATION Footscray, VIC  |  LEAD BY Angeli Shaw

Sustainable Salons Australia (SSA) grabbed 5 minutes with the effervescent Angeli Shaw, owner of Blue Phoenix Hair Design, SSA member and passionate green warrior!

SSA | What does sustainability mean to Blue Phoenix Hair Design?
AS | Sustainability means everything! Priding ourselves on being a socially responsible salon, as a team, we understand the importance of aiming to reduce the depletion of natural resources. It’s something we’ve always done. We have energy-saving lights, use recycled foil and even have a salon fit-out made of recycled materials such as timber offcuts, old doors and second hand items. Being part of the Sustainable Salons program not only reinforces our salon values and ideals, but allows us to take sustainability to the next level!

SSA | What part of the program do your clients love the most?
AS | Definitely the hair recycling! So many people could not even comprehend what can be done with hair, assuming it just goes in the rubbish. Our team keeps a mini hair boom behind the desk and love not only explaining but showing them how the offcuts from their service can be used to soak up oil spills and further help the environment. It makes them feel like they’re contributing to such a great cause and gives them new meaning to ‘getting a haircut’.

SSA | What is your favourite product in the Rewards Shop?
AS | Can we say everything? We love the selection of items from biodegradable gloves to the salon composting bin, all the items are such a wonderful reward and more additions to our sustainable practices.

SSA | Who’s the ‘green warrior’ of your team?
AS | I’d like to say all of us! Each of us does our part to ensure we utilise the program and it’s benefits and that we recycle everything we can. As the owner, I’m always looking at ways to make the salon more ‘green’. Our tip jar is recycled glass and our reception desk is made of old doors and timber. If clients don’t finish their glass of water, we always use what’s left to water our garden, rather than pour it down the sink. We have laminated client cards so they can be re-used – all suggestions from the team. A special mention to our beautiful apprentice Brooke, who has put her hand up to empty out the bins and put our rubbish out fortnightly. She does such a great job!

SSA | What would you say to encourage a salon to join SSA?
AS | I could honestly write an essay on this, but here’s my perspective. When you have a vision, all the small things – the small pictures – once you put them together make up the big picture. As salons, we are the small pictures that make up the big picture, the industry as a whole.

“If we all do our part to protect the environment and make the world a better place not just now, but for our future generations to enjoy, what a beautiful, amazing big picture we create together!”

Joining the SSA program shouldn’t be a thought, it’s an urge, and I urge all salons to be a part of this wonderful, fulfilling program.

SSA | What is Blue Phoenix Hair Design’s proudest sustainability achievement so far?
AS | What makes me the proudest is just how much we have reduced colour wastage. In the past, it was difficult to measure just how much was going down the sink. We joined SSA in May last year and our chemical bucket is only a third full. Our aim was to not need a new bucket for 12 months but the way the team is going it looks like it will be a lot longer!

Sustainable Salons Australia provides the most comprehensive waste free systems to the professional hairdressing industry. We collect and recycle 95% of a salon’s waste and reward the salon for their recycling efforts!
